Described below are three thermometers recommended by the Best Baby Products staff.
Thermoscan Ear Thermometer
Takes your child's temperature and gives you a reading within one second. The thermometer will not operate without a disposable lens filter, which is very sanitary but also can get expensive. Results are usually in the ballpark, however they can be thrown off even more by improper placement inside the ear. Some users have complained that they rarely get the same temperature twice.
First Years Comfortemp Underarm Thermometer
Converts underarm temperature to body tem-perature by adding 1.8 degrees to the reading. Built in beeper signals start and end of the reading. Uses a 9v battery. This choice is not as accurate as the rectal thermometer but provides an option for parents who are uncomfortable with the preferred alternative.
Pacifier Plus with Temperature Indicator
Recommended for use with children ages birth to five years. A good alternative for those parents who are uncomfortable using a rectal thermometer. While not as accurate as the rectal thermometer, readings are considered accurate within 0.5 degrees. Not all children take to a pacifier and this method should be used only with those who do.
This product is just as effective as the rectal mercury thermometer when used rectally and may prove more reliable due to the fact that some parents have difficulty reading a traditional glass thermometer and could read it incorrectly. Can also be used orally or underarm. Reaches the final temperature reading more quickly than a mercury thermometer.
